Everyone wants to either gain weight, lose weight or remain fit. Which of these categories do you belong to? We are here to guide you on if the decision you’re about to make on your weight is the right one for you or not.

Let’s start with weight loss…

Everyone wants to have the “perfect” body, but is the “perfect” body perfect for you? As long as you’re a healthy weight, no matter how “big” you look, you have the perfect body. So what are important reasons to lose weight?

  1. To reduce the risk of Heart Diseases and Cancer; Being overweight is known to raise cholesterol level, increase blood pressure and damage blood vessels which puts one at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease, heart attack and even stroke. Being overweight is also linked to increased risk cancer of the esophagus, breast , endometrium, colon, rectum, kidney, pancreas, thyroid and gallbladder, and possibly other types of cancer as well, according to the National Cancer Institute. Losing weight helps you reduce the risk of having these diseases.

  2. To reduce stress: Stress is a killer. Stress can lead to mood swings or depression. Stress is something that everyone has to deal with. As well as negatively impacting your health, stress can also contribute to weight gain. It’s normal to crave sugary food when you’re stressed, making it harder to resist temptation. Of course, sugary foods are not going to help your waistline. Reducing stress will allow your body to balance hormones including those that control hunger and appetite. The link between weight loss and stress is simple. When you start losing the pounds, you’ll sleep better, reducing your stress levels.

Now, to weight gain

Some valid reasons for gaining weight include;

  • Having a BMI below the healthy weight level

  • Constantly losing weight without trying

  • Having an Underactive Thyroid; An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) means your thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormones. This slows the body’s metabolism and can lead to weight gain. Although an underactive thyroid can occur at any age and in either sex, it is most common in older women.

Whether you’re trying to lose weight or gain weight, it is important to know your BMI. The BMI (Body Mass Index) Tracker is a tool that helps you calculate your body mass index by inputting your height and weight. Knowing your BMI is important in helping you determine how healthy or unhealthy your body is.

The BMI outrightly tells you if you’re underweight, a healthy weight, overweight or obesed.
