Does it seem like we are getting busier each day, whether it's in our personal life combined with our work life every day it seems like the world is constantly in fast-word mode *wasn’t January last week?*
With how life seems to be so fast-paced with each day, where demands on our time and energy are ever-increasing, the health and well-being of your employees are more important than ever. The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that chronic diseases will cost the global economy $47 trillion over the next two decades with a significant portion of the workforce dealing with chronic health issues.
Chronic health issues, such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and mental health conditions, affect a large number of employees. These conditions can have a profound impact on both their personal lives and their ability to perform at work.
That is why as an employer or HR professional, it is important that you recognize the challenges your employees face due to chronic health issues is the first step toward creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace. Here are some key strategies to consider:
1. Flexible Work Arrangements
One of the most effective ways to support employees with chronic health issues is to provide flexible work arrangements. This could include options like remote work, flexible hours, or job-sharing. These arrangements can help employees manage their health while still contributing to the organization.
2. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)
Implementing Employee Assistance Programs can be a game-changer for your workforce. EAPs provide confidential access to counselling and support services, addressing not only physical but also mental health issues. Encourage employees to use these programs and ensure they are aware of their availability.
3. Creating an Inclusive Culture
Foster a workplace culture that values diversity and inclusivity. Organise sensitivity and inclusivity training for your staff to ensure that employees with chronic health issues are not stigmatized or discriminated against. An inclusive culture boosts morale and encourages everyone to perform at their best.
4. Wellness Initiatives
Wellness programs can greatly benefit employees dealing with chronic health issues. Organize workshops, seminars, and activities that promote physical and mental well-being among your staff you can partner with your healthcare providers for example OneHealth. Encourage healthy eating, exercise, and stress management. Small changes can make a big difference.
5. Communication and Awareness
Open and empathetic communication is key. Encourage employees to discuss their health issues with HR or their supervisors, so that appropriate accommodations would be made. Create awareness campaigns to educate your workforce (share internal memos, and weekly Slack updates letting your staff know that such an avenue exists, etc.), about common chronic health conditions and the support available.
