Nigeria accounts for approximately 28% of global maternal deaths. With a maternal mortality ratio of 1,047 per 100,000 live births, thousands of women face life-threatening maternal health complications annually. In response, OneHealth Pharmacy is introducing Maami, a maternal and sexual health initiative dedicated to improving access, awareness, and outcomes for women nationwide.
Throughout 2026, the initiative will run monthly physical and virtual activations focused on maternal and sexual health education, preventive care, and access to essential health services. The goal is to reach 15,000 to 20,000 women through physical outreaches and deliver 8,000 to 10,000 WhatsApp consultations. Activities include free health screenings, contraceptive consultations, and connections to ongoing digital support via the OneHealth platform.
Maami addresses three critical barriers that Nigerian women face when seeking maternal or sexual healthcare: distance, cost, and judgment. The initiative brings healthcare directly to women on campuses, in markets, at churches, and in corporate offices across Lagos and Ibadan. Free WhatsApp consultations with licensed pharmacists provide 24/7 access to trusted sexual and reproductive health advice. Meanwhile, 15 pharmacy distribution hubs across these cities ensure convenient access to products and prescriptions.
Maami is grounded in the belief that sustained, consistent engagement is essential to achieving meaningful and lasting impact. By addressing sexual health as a foundational component of maternal wellness, the initiative takes a holistic approach to women's health. With a network of over 2,200 pharmacy partners nationwide and over five years of operational excellence serving more than 100,000 customers, OneHealth has the infrastructure and expertise to deliver on this mission.
The initiative officially launches this week with a Sexual Health Awareness Week at the University of Lagos from February 17th to 19th, 2026. The activation is designed to equip young women (and men) with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed sexual and reproductive health decisions. By engaging young adults early, Maami establishes a foundation for improved maternal health outcomes over time.
OneHealth is proud to partner with the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, AIESEC in Lagos and the Association of Medical Students in Lagos to bring the flagship project to life and maximize reach.
OneHealth invites healthcare professionals, community organizations, and brands who share this commitment to maternal health to join the movement. Interested parties can reach out via any social media channel @onehealthng or visit www.onehealthng.com.
