Dosage of Betadrone-N Eye and Ear Drops

Betadrone-N Eye and Ear Drops is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM).

Take as directed by the physician. The number of drops and frequency depends entirely on the condition being treated.

Typical Dosage (Strictly follow physician's instructions):

• Eye: 1 to 2 drops instilled into the affected eye(s) 3 to 4 times a day.
• Ear: 2 to 3 drops instilled into the affected ear 3 to 4 times a day.

Proper Administration

• Route: Topical (Eye Instillation or Ear Instillation).
• How to Use (Eye):
  1. Wash hands. Tilt head back and gently pull the lower eyelid down to form a small pocket.
  2. Instill the prescribed number of drops into the pocket.
  3. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes.
• How to Use (Ear):
  1. Warm the bottle gently in your hand for a minute.
  2. Tilt the head sideways, instill the drops, and keep the head tilted for 2-3 minutes.

Duration: The course should be limited (e.g., 7-10 days) as per medical advice.

Contraindications of Betadrone-N Eye and Ear Drops

Do NOT use Betadrone-N Eye and Ear Drops if the patient:

• Has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Betamethasone, Neomycin (or any other aminoglycoside antibiotic like Gentamicin), or any other component.
• Has viral infections of the eye (e.g., Herpes Simplex, often presenting as dendritic ulcer) or ear (e.g., Herpes Zoster Oticus).
• Has fungal infections of the eye or ear.
• Has Tuberculosis of the eye or ear.
• Has a perforated eardrum or other compromise to the tympanic membrane (CRUCIAL WARNING).

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Warnings

• Pregnancy: Consult your doctor. Due to the steroid and antibiotic components, use during pregnancy is advised only if the benefit outweighs the potential risk. Use should be limited in dosage and duration.
• Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor. It is unknown if the ingredients pass into breast milk in significant amounts. Use only when advised by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects of Betadrone-N Eye and Ear Drops

Side effects are generally localized but can be serious, particularly with prolonged use.

• Common Side Effects (Mild and Expected): Temporary stinging, burning, or itching immediately after instillation in the eye or ear.
• Serious but Rare Side Effects (that may require medical attention):
  • Eye Use (Prolonged): Increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which can lead to glaucoma. Posterior subcapsular cataract formation. Delayed wound healing.
  • Ear Use (Perforated Eardrum): Irreversible Ototoxicity (hearing damage or deafness) due to the Neomycin component reaching the inner ear.
  • Allergic Reactions: Swelling of the eyelids, rash, or persistent redness.

What to do if side effects occur:

• If vision changes, eye pain, persistent irritation, or signs of hearing loss or ringing in the ears occur, stop the medication immediately and seek medical attention.

Precautions and Warnings of Betadrone-N Eye and Ear Drops

• Prescription Only: This potent medicine must be used only under the direction of an ophthalmologist or ENT specialist/physician.
• Eardrum Status: CRUCIAL WARNING: Never use these drops if the eardrum is perforated or if you suspect perforation.
• Duration of Use: Do NOT use for prolonged periods (e.g., over 7-10 days) to minimize the risk of steroid side effects (IOP/Cataracts) and antibiotic resistance, unless specifically reviewed and directed by a doctor.
• Otic Use: Use only in the external ear canal.
• Contamination: Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, the eye, or the ear, to avoid contamination of the solution.
• Eye Monitoring: If used for more than 10 days, regular monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP) by an ophthalmologist is mandatory.
