Dosage of Greens Milk of Magnesia Suspension

Greens Milk of Magnesia Suspension is an Over-the-Counter (OTC) medication.

Shake Well Before Use. Take as directed by the pharmacist or physician.

Dosage for Constipation (Laxative Use)

• Adults and Children 12 years and older: 30 mL (2 TBSP) to 60 mL (4 TBSP) once daily.
• Children 6-11 years: 15 mL (1 TBSP) to 30 mL (2 TBSP) once daily.
• Children under 6 years: Consult a doctor.

Dosage for Heartburn/Indigestion (Antacid Use)

• Adults and Children 12 years and older: 5 mL to 15 mL up to four times a day. Do not exceed 60 mL in a 24-hour period.

Proper Administration

• Route: Oral suspension.
• How to Take: Measure the exact dose using the cup or spoon provided. Shake the bottle vigorously before each dose. Follow with a full glass of water.
• Timing (Laxative): Best taken at bedtime for expected morning relief (works within 30 minutes to 6 hours).
• Timing (Antacid): Best taken after meals or at bedtime as needed.

Missed Dose Guidance

• Not applicable, as this is an as-needed medication for symptom relief.

Contraindications of Greens Milk of Magnesia Suspension

Do NOT take Greens Milk of Magnesia Suspension if you:

• Have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Magnesium Hydroxide or any other ingredient in the product.
• Have kidney disease or severe kidney impairment, due to the high risk of magnesium accumulation (hypermagnesemia) and toxicity.
• Have appendicitis or symptoms of appendicitis (such as persistent stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting).
• Have a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts longer than 14 days.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Warnings

• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor. While generally considered safe for occasional use in recommended doses, it is always advisable to consult a physician before using any laxative or antacid, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Side Effects of Greens Milk of Magnesia Suspension

Side effects are generally related to its laxative action.

• Common Side Effects (Mild and Expected): Diarrhoea (dose-dependent), mild abdominal cramps, and slight weakness.
• Serious but Rare Side Effects (that may require medical attention):
  • Rectal Bleeding: Blood in stool or continued rectal bleeding.
  • Severe Dehydration: Symptoms include dizziness, reduced urination, and extreme thirst.
  • Hypermagnesemia (Magnesium Overload): Rare, but serious in patients with kidney problems. Symptoms include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, and confusion.

What to do if side effects occur:

• Diarrhoea: Diarrhoea is a common side effect; reducing the dose or stopping the medicine will usually resolve it.
• No Bowel Movement: If you experience no bowel movement within 6 hours of taking it as a laxative, or if serious symptoms occur, stop use and seek medical attention immediately.

Precautions and Warnings of Greens Milk of Magnesia Suspension

• Kidney Caution: If you have any degree of kidney impairment, do not take this product without consulting a physician due to the risk of magnesium toxicity.
• Drug Interactions: Magnesium Hydroxide can decrease the absorption of many other oral medications (e.g., certain antibiotics, heart medications like Digoxin, and thyroid medications). Take this product at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking any other prescription drug.
• Duration of Use (Laxative): Do not use as a laxative for more than 7 consecutive days. Persistent constipation requires a medical diagnosis.
• Duration of Use (Antacid): Do not take the maximum antacid dose for more than 14 consecutive days without consulting a doctor.
• Fluid Intake: Drink a full glass (8 oz) of water or liquid with each dose to aid effectiveness and prevent dehydration.
