Loxagyl contains a medicine called metronidazole. This belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria and parasites that cause infections in your body.
It can be used to:

  • Treat infections of the blood, brain, lung, bones, genital tract, pelvic area, stomach and intestines
  •  Treat gum ulcers and other dental infections
  • Treat infected leg ulcers and pressure sores
  • Prevent infections after surgery

It is the drug of choice for first episodes of mild-to-moderate

  • Clostridium difficile infection.
  • Bacterial vaginosis, commonly associated with overgrowth of Gardnerella species and coinfective anaerobes (Mobiluncus, Bacteroides), in symptomatic patients.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease in addition to other quinolones.
  • Anaerobic bacterial infections or any other anaerobes in intra-abdominal abscess, peritonitis, empyema, pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia, lung abscess, diabetic foot ulcer, meningitis and brain abscess, bone and joint infections, septicemia, endometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, or endocarditis
  • Pseudomembranous colitis due to Clostridium difficile
  •  Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy, as part of a multi-drug regimen in peptic ulcer disease
  • Amoebiasis: Infections caused by Entamoeba Histolytica.
  • Giardiasis: infection.

How to Use

How to Use:

The typical dose of Loxagyl for adults is 750 mg three times daily orally for 5 to 10 days. The usual dose for children is 35 to 50 mg/kg/24 hours or 15.9 to 22.7 mg/lb/kg/24 hours, orally for 10 days divided into three doses. The maximum dose for adult patients of Loxagyl is 2000 mg per day. This medicine is generally used for a period of 7 days for trichomoniasis, 5-10 days for amebiasis, 7-10 days for anaerobic bacterial infections, 5-7 days for bacterial vaginosis, 3-10 days for giardiasis, 3 days for acute ulcerative gingivitis, 3-7 days for acute dental infections, 7 days for leg ulcers and pressure sores, and 7-14 days for eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
