Desofem is an oral daily contraceptive pill containing desogestrel 0.15mg and ethinylestradiol 0.03mg used safely and effectively in the treatment of menorrhagia (heavy menstruation), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), as well as pregnancy prevention.

Desogestrel is a progestogen that is structurally related to levonorgestrel while ethinylestradiol is a synthetic oestrogen. Used together, they inhibit ovulation by a negative feedback mechanism on the hypothalamus, which alters the normal FSH and LH secretion pattern by the anterior pituitary.  It also causes changes in the cervical mucus, making it unsuitable for sperm penetration.

Side Effects: Intermenstrual bleeding, post-medication amenorrhoea, Breast tenderness, pain, Nausea, vomiting,  Headache, migraine, mood changes, depression. Fluid retention, change in body weight.
