Loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of stool in people who have an ileostomy (re-routing of the bowel through a surgical opening in the stomach).
Active Ingredient: Loperamide Hydrochloride
Side Effects: Common side Effects may include;
- constipation;
- dizziness,
- drowsiness;
- nausea; or
- stomach cramps.
adults and children (12 years and over)- 2 caplets after the first loose stool; 1 caplet after each subsequent loose stool; but no more than 4 caplets in 24 hours
children 9-11 years (60-95 pounds)- 1 caplet after the first loose stool; ½ caplet after each subsequent loose stool; but no more than 3 caplets in 24 hours
children 6-8 years (48-59 pounds)- 1 caplet after the first loose stool; ½ caplet after each subsequent loose stool; but no more than 2 caplets in 24 hours
What should I avoid while taking loperamide?
- Avoid drinking tonic water. It can interact with loperamide and may cause serious heart problems.
- Avoid becoming dehydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid vigorous exercise or exposure to hot weather if you are dehydrated.
- Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired.
