Product Details

About this item

Otrivin Adult Nasal Drops contain the active ingredient Xylometazoline Hydrochloride (0.1%), which belongs to the class of sympathomimetic decongestants. The drops are formulated for direct application into the nasal passages. Xylometazoline works by causing the swollen blood vessels in the nasal lining to narrow (vasoconstriction), which quickly reduces swelling and excessive nasal secretions. This action typically starts working within minutes (2 to 5 minutes) and provides long-lasting relief (up to 12 hours), allowing users to breathe easily through the nose. Moisturizing ingredients like Sorbitol and Hypromellose are often included to prevent dryness and irritation.

How to Use

Dosage of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drops

This is an Over-The-Counter (OTC) medicine.

  • Adults and Adolescents (12 years and over): Instill 2 to 3 drops into each nostril, 2 to 3 times daily, as necessary.
  • Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 3 applications in each nostril daily. Do not use more often than every 8 to 10 hours.

Proper Administration

  • Preparation: Blow your nose gently before application to clear any mucus.
  • Application: Tilt the head back, or lie down. Without touching the dropper to the nostril, apply the prescribed number of drops into each nostril. Keep the head tilted back for a short time to allow the drops to spread.
  • Hygiene: After each use, clean and dry the dropper before replacing it. Do not share the bottle to avoid spreading infection.

Duration: Do not use this product for more than 3 to 7 consecutive days without medical advice.

Pharmacist's Advice

Contraindications of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drops

  • Known Allergies: Do NOT use if you are allergic to Xylometazoline or any other ingredients (e.g., Benzalkonium Chloride).
  • Specific Nasal Conditions: Do NOT use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or inflammatory nasal dryness (rhinitis sicca or atrophic rhinitis).
  • Recent Surgery: Do NOT use after recent neurosurgery (trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater).
  • MAOIs/Antidepressants: Do NOT use if you are taking or have taken a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) within the last two weeks, or if you are taking tri- and tetra-cyclic antidepressants, due to the risk of severe blood pressure increase.

Side Effects of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drops

  • Common Side Effects (Local): Local burning sensation, stinging, dry nose, nasal discomfort, headache, or nausea.
  • Serious but Rare Side Effects (That May Require Medical Attention): Signs of too much medicine being absorbed (dizziness, pounding/fast heartbeat, high blood pressure), or a severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/throat). Seek immediate medical attention if systemic symptoms occur.

Precautions and Warnings of Otrivin Adult Nasal Drops

  • Systemic Risk: Use with caution if you have underlying conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease (including long QT syndrome), diabetes mellitus, or an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), as Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic agent and can increase blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before use. Due to the potential for systemic vasoconstriction, use during pregnancy should be avoided unless strictly necessary.

Visual Disturbances: Rarely, transient visual impairment can occur; if you experience blurred vision, do not drive or operate machinery.
