About this item
Piriton tablets are indicated for symptomatic control of all allergic conditions responsive to antihistamines, including hay fever, vasomotor rhinitis, urticaria, angioneurotic oedema, food allergy, drug and serum reactions, insect bites.
Also indicated for the symptomatic relief of itch associated with chickenpox.
Piriton tablets and syrup contain the active ingredient chlorphenamine maleate. Chlorphenamine is a type of medicine called a sedating antihistamine, so-called because it can make you feel sleepy. It works by preventing the actions of histamine.
Allergies
Histamine is a substance produced by the body when it reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen or pet fur (this is called an allergen). Histamine causes the symptoms of allergic reactions.
In allergies like hay fever and pet allergies, histamine causes inflammation of the nose, eyes or airways, resulting in itchy, watery eyes, a runny, blocked or itchy nose and sneezing. In allergic skin reactions histamine causes skin inflammation, rashes and itching.
Chlorphenamine blocks histamine from binding to its receptors in various parts of the body. This stops it from causing the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Piriton usually starts to relieve symptoms within half an hour to an hour after taking a dose.
Adults and adolescents aged over 12 years Take one tablet every 4-6 hours. Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours
Elderly Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking this medicine as you may need to take a lower daily dose
Children aged 6-12 years Give half a tablet every 4-6 hours. Do not give more than six half tablets in 24 hours
Children under 6 Not recommended
Piriton tablets and Piriton allergy tablets contain lactose and are not suitable for people with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
