Dosage of Rhinathiol Promethazine Syrup

Rhinathiol Promethazine Syrup is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM).

Take as directed by the pharmacist or physician.

Dosage is strictly determined based on the patient's age and weight, and the severity of the symptoms. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or frequency.

Proper Administration

• Route: Oral suspension.
• How to Take: Shake the bottle well before use. Measure the exact prescribed dose using a proper measuring device (e.g., measuring spoon or cup). It can be taken with or without food.
• Best Time of Day: Due to the strong sedative effect, it is typically recommended to take the syrup at night (bedtime) to control nocturnal coughs and allow for uninterrupted sleep. If prescribed during the day, use caution.

Missed Dose Guidance

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
• If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Contraindications of Rhinathiol Promethazine 125mL Syrup

Do NOT take Rhinathiol Promethazine Syrup if you:

• Have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Promethazine, Carbocisteine, or any other ingredient in the syrup.
• Are taking or have recently taken Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), including within the last 14 days.
• Have narrow-angle glaucoma or conditions causing urinary retention (e.g., prostate problems).
• Have a history of agranulocytosis (a severe reduction in white blood cells).
• Have severe liver disease.
• Are treating a cough in children under 2 years of age (due to the risk of respiratory depression).

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Warnings

• Pregnancy: Consult your doctor. This medication is generally not recommended during the first trimester. Use in later stages is only advised if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk.
• Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor. Promethazine passes into breast milk and may cause sedation or irritability in the infant. It may also suppress lactation. Use is generally not advised while breastfeeding.

Side Effects of Rhinathiol Promethazine Syrup

Due to the Promethazine component, side effects are common and often pronounced.

• Common Side Effects (Mild and Expected): Drowsiness/Sedation (very common), dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, difficulty urinating, and constipation.
• Serious but Rare Side Effects (that may require medical attention):
  • Allergic Reactions: Severe rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
  • Central Nervous System (CNS) Effects: Tremors, confusion, hallucinations, or unusual excitement (paradoxical excitation, especially in children).
  • Respiratory Depression: Severe difficulty breathing (a risk, especially in very young children or high doses).

What to do if side effects occur:

• For common drowsiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.
• For any serious or sudden adverse effects (especially a rash or difficulty breathing), stop the medication immediately and seek emergency medical attention.

• Sedation Risk: This medication causes significant drowsiness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform complex tasks after taking this syrup.
• Alcohol Interaction: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medication, as it significantly enhances the sedative effect, which can be dangerous.
• Asthma and Respiratory Disease: Use with extreme caution in patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other breathing difficulties, as it can worsen respiratory depression.
• Epilepsy/Seizures: Use with caution in patients with a history of epilepsy or seizure disorders, as it may lower the seizure threshold.
• Elderly Patients: Use with caution, as elderly individuals are more susceptible to side effects like confusion, dizziness, and urinary retention.
• Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially other sedatives, tranquilizers, antidepressants (TCAs, SSRIs), or cold/flu medicines, as the sedative effects can be dangerously increased.
